The Tin shop
In the 1800s, Bradford, NH, supported a thriving, localized economy where essential goods were crafted by hand. Among the town’s tradesmen were the local tinsmiths, who manufactured and repaired household items like cups, pails, lanterns, and tin-plated kitchenware.
This building was the town's primary tin shop. Originally attached to the house across the drive, which was the home of Mosses C. Bates. It then became a tin shop, housed Arthur B Gardner's business for decades, and stocked tinware and household goods.
Other early tin-smithing shops operated by different tradesmen across Bradford were located in Bradford Center. This area housed early general merchants who provided raw tin and goods from traveling tinsmiths
At Lafayette Corner, a building here (famously housed a store run by Jeremiah Page) it later became a shop operated by the Marshall family.
In the Mill area, merchants and various smithing operations clustered around the Warner River crossings to supply the growing agricultural and residential community.
In the 1970s, the building housed the offices of Stewart Agency Realtors, Colby Insurance, and accountant Harold Gustavsson. Before BHS purchased the building in 2013, the building was half Stewart Agency and half a barber’s shop!
